Dear Governor Cuomo:
On behalf of Fans for the Cure, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to saving men’s lives by promoting early detection and treatment of prostate cancer, I am writing to urge you to sign into law S6882-A/A8683-A.
Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men; about one man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. A PSA screening – a simple blood test – can help doctors detect prostate cancer in its early stages, when it is most curable and offers the most treatment options. First-time diagnoses of prostate cancer that has not spread to distant bones or lymph nodes have a relative cure rate that exceeds 99 percent.
S6882-A/A8683-A will eliminate barriers to prostate cancer screenings by prohibiting screenings from being subject to annual deductibles or coinsurance, thus ensuring the accessibility of this critically important test to men most at-risk for the disease – namely, those having a prior history, men 40 and over with a family history, and men 50 and over who are asymptomatic. In doing so, this legislation furthers sound public policy by encouraging preventative care, which produces better health outcomes and reduces costs to the healthcare system, while also establishing parity with legislation enacted by the State in 2015 to ensure women have access to breast cancer screenings at no cost to them.
For these reasons, Fans for the Cure respectfully requests your support of this life-saving legislation by signing S6882-A/A8683-A.
