The creator of TheActiveSurveillor.com, Howard Wolinsky was a medical writer for the Chicago Sun-Times for nearly thirty years and a regular contributor to MedPage Today and Medscape. When he was diagnosed with Gleason 6 (now also called GG1) prostate cancer he stepped back and said “No thanks” as he felt he was being rushed to choose a radical treatment option. Fourteen years down the road from his cancer diagnosis, he is one of the country’s most passionate voices for active surveillance as a first (and possibly forever) step as a response to indolent/favorable diagnoses of prostate cancer.
Besides being one of the country’s foremost prostate cancer advocates, Howard is also a full-time student (at age 77) in the University of Illinois – Chicago’s School of Public Health, one of the top-ranked Public Health grad programs in the U.S.
