At Fans for the Cure, a key aspect of our work focuses on raising awareness and educating about prostate cancer. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and we have been busy organizing and coordinating with our partners to produce a number of great events and programs. Yet, there are a number of wonderful organizations and institutions doing work in this field. Our commitment to education and awareness inspires us to share information about events, panels, and webinars from both our partners and others in the prostate cancer community.

Prostate Health: What You Need to Know
Date: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 7 PM – 8 PM ET
This event is organized by the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. In a panel discussion and Q&A session, the following topics will be covered:
- Prostate health and African-American men
- What is the prostate and what does it do?
- What are the risk factors for prostate cancer?
- Should you get screened for prostate cancer? When?
- A survivor will share his story
Ask a Radiation Oncologist: Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer
Date: Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at 7 PM ET
Radiation Oncology experts Drs. Ben Wilkinson, Curtiland Deville, Dominque Rash, and Daniel Spratt will speak about radiation therapy for prostate cancer. In a Facebook LIVE event, they will answer patient questions live.
CURE’s Prostate Cancer Summit
Date: Saturday, September 26, 2020 from 1 PM – 5 PM ET
CURE®’s Educated Patient® Prostate Cancer Summit is a half-day virtual event seeking to educate, inform and challenge the thinking of patients with prostate cancer. The program is designed to represent every demographic of patient and all stages of cancer, as well as patients, caregivers and advocates.
The optimal care of patients with prostate cancer is rapidly changing as a result of advances in all aspects of patient care, including diagnosis, treatment options and long-term effects. There is an increased focus on providing multidisciplinary care for patients with complex diseases, such as prostate cancer, with integrated teams of professionals representing the relevant treatment modalities, including surgery, radiation therapy and systemic medical interventions. This summit will also take a look at the future of prostate cancer care and discuss what’s on the horizon.
Columbia’s Urology Today – Prostate Health
Date: Thursday, September 17, 2020 from 12 PM – 1 PM ET
Columbia Urology is hosting a free webinar on prostate health. This webinar represents a chance to ask the experts about a wide range of topics relevant to prostate cancer, including topics related to:
- Early detection and screening for prostate cancer, including who should be tested when and how often
- New tests beyond PSA, such as urine and genetic tests
- Early diagnostic techniques such as MRI and MRI guided biopsies
- Tools to determine which cancers need to be treated, and which ones don’t
- Treatment options of localized prostate cancer such as surveillance, robotic surgery, radiation, and ablative therapies such as cryo surgery and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)
- The diagnosis and treatment options for patients with recurrent prostate cancer after therapy, including new PET imaging modalities as well as advances in hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy
Health Disparities in Prostate Cancer for Black Men
The folks at ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer held an online webinar on September 9, 2020 focused on the health disparities in prostate cancer for Black men. That webinar was recorded, so we are sharing it here.
