For many of us, our dads joined forces with our moms as our biggest supporters in life – the most enthusiastic coaches, Math tutors, four-star chefs, compelling storytellers and, above all, the shoulders that we were always able to lean upon.
In June we recognize National Men’s Health Awareness month as we celebrate our fathers on Sunday, June 18th. Father’s Day marks the perfect opportunity each year when we can turn to the men in our lives and remind them of the prevalence of prostate cancer and how a simple PSA blood test can lead to a) peace of mind if they do not have prostate cancer or b) early detection, the least-invasive treatment options, and best outcomes if they do.
Fans for the Cure will take part in over 100 in-person health events in 2023, many of which will feature free screening components, such as the September 20 screening at Yankee Stadium with Montefiore Medical Center. In collaboration with our healthcare partners and grantors, most of our efforts will target medically underserved communities in the New York area and on the East Coast.
With 1 in 8 men being diagnosed with prostate cancer annually, our goal is to convince men to initiate discussions with their doctors about getting a PSA test, with suggested age based on family history/genetics and ethnicity. Our doctors tell us that earlier diagnoses would save thousands of lives and reduce the duration of treatment regimens.
Please help us to keep all the fathers out there in the game as vital forces in the lives of their families and communities. Consider a donation to the outreach programs of Fans for the Cure as we continue to urge men to take responsibility for their health.
Sincerely yours,
Steve Garvey
