An article published in European Urology presents evidence from a Harvard study suggesting that frequency of ejaculations may be inversely related to the risk of prostate cancer. That is, there seems to be a connection indicating that frequent ejaculations reduce prostate cancer risk in some men. This is important information because, outside of general lifestyle suggestions (e.g. don’t smoke, eat healthy foods, maintain a healthy body weight), there have been few if any modifiable risk factors identified through research.
More Ejaculations Reduce Prostate Cancer Risk
The subjects were 31,925 health professionals who answered survey questions about ejaculation frequency in a 1992 questionnaire and were then followed through 2010. The study found that high levels of sexual activity or masturbation resulting in ejaculation can reduce the risk of contracting prostate cancer by 33 percent.
The optimum number according to the study is 21 ejaculations per month. For those who need additional metrics, the study’s sweet spot adds up to 252 times annually or, if done once a day, almost 70 percent of days in a year.
While experts haven’t been able to tell with 100 percent certainty why ejaculation lowers the risk of prostate cancer, several have speculated that it might flush out cancer-causing toxins that were being stored within men’s bodies.
As part of the Sun article about the study, a representative of Prostate Cancer UK speculated that the annual deaths from the disease in the UK will increase 50 percent by 2026, to over 15,000.
