Baseball fans from around the tristate area and beyond gathered for our Miracle Mets 50th Anniversary Celebration last week at SVA Theater in New York City. The evening was packed full of laughter and stories about one of the most unlikely comebacks in baseball history. At a time when global tension led to national transformation, the 1969 Mets won more that the World Series – they won the hearts and minds of America.
Sports history buffs got the inside scoop from Maxcine Agee on why Cleon Jones was famously late to Maxcine’s wedding with Tommie, and why Art Shamsky temporarily stood in as best man. Ed Kranepool offered comic relief and Ron Swoboda summed up the ‘69 Mets and their professional careers with a quote from Robert Browning, “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for?”
Brooklyn Cyclones Manager Edgardo Alfonzo shared how Ed Randall offered guidance and support during Alfonzo’s fight with prostate cancer. FFTC also welcomed family members of fallen NYPD officers and New York Governor David Patterson.
