As we head to the 4th of July and the heart of the summer, Fans for the Cure wishes everyone the best of times spent with your families and friends during the warm weather months. And whether your summer activities mean traveling for vacation or firing up the backyard grill (or both), we hope these days will bring happiness and relaxation.
It will be a busy month for the team at Fans for the Cure. We will be boarding the charity’s jet (okay, United) for a Prostate Cancer Awareness Day in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Sunday, July 9. It will be a collaboration among the Cedar Rapids Kernels, Mercy Hospital, and Fans for the Cure, with information tables, handouts, and physicians on hand to answer questions about prostate cancer and how/where to get screened. Following the game, there will be an on-field Catch for the Cure, open to all spectators. We thank our generous Catch sponsor, Rawlings, for providing hundreds of free baseballs for this event.
We are also pleased to release June’s Stay in the Game podcast, an engaging conversation with Dr. Jonathan Haas, CyberKnife pioneer and Chair of Radiation Oncology at NYU Long Island. We hope you come away from the discussion as optimistic as Dr. Haas was about the advances in quantity and quality of diagnostic and treatment options for prostate cancer in 2023.
Stay tuned for the dates of the prostate cancer awareness and screening nights we are currently finalizing for August-November with the Yankees, Mets, Brooklyn Cyclones, and the Islanders. And if you’re anywhere near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on July 9, we expect you to make the trip and bring your glove! See you on the field for an iced tea and a catch. |

Baseball Road Trip Bound for Cedar Rapids, Iowa |
| |
Fans for the Cure will be joining with the Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center and Mercy Urology Clinic at Mercy Medical Center for a Prostate Cancer Awareness Day on Sunday, July 9th at Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
In addition to information tables with handout sheets, physicians and nurses from Mercy Medical Center will be on hand to answer questions about prostate cancer and where/how men can get a PSA test in the Cedar Rapids area.
Following the game, spectators will be invited to take to the field with their baseball gloves for a Catch for the Cure, an opportunity to both enjoy a catch with a special person and to support a good cause – the programs of Fans for the Cure. Thanks to our generous Catch sponsor Rawlings, all participants will receive a free baseball from the Kernels as they take the field.
Mercy Medical Center will also be holding a Catch for the Cure event in September as part of National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Breaking Down Treatment Silos = More Options for Prostate Cancer Care |
| |
Leading physician and Cyberknife pioneer, Jonathan Haas, MD, is the Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at NYU Long Island School of Medicine. In a recent conversation on our highly rated Stay in the Game podcast, Dr. Haas eloquently talked through the many treatment options for prostate cancer – and how bringing a holistic approach to treating the disease provides patients with more options for their care.
We thank our sponsor, MRIdian by ViewRay for their support of our educational show. |

Yankee Stadium Screening Confirmed |
| |
The annual Yankee Stadium screening has been scheduled for September 20, in advance of and during the early innings of that night’s game between the Yankees and Blue Jays.
Montefiore Medical Center, the new health partner of the Yankees, is enthusiastic about continuing this event with onsite testing.
We thank NewYork-Presbyterian for a highly successful collaboration which saw a nine-year total of over 1,500 spectators, employees, and working NYPD officers receive PSA screenings and follow-up as part of National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. |
