This year has seen Fans for the Cure work through a jam-packed schedule of events and happenings planned for National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. We assisted in organizing, delivering, and supporting more than a dozen events and activities.
The charity was privileged to partner with Montefiore/Einstein at Yankee Stadium and looks forward to working with NewYork-Presbyterian when we head out to Queens to collaborate with the Mets later this week. Beyond these signature events, we also partnered with Molloy University Community Care, Fordham University, and the Town of Oyster Bay in what was perhaps our most productive awareness month.
Tickets are still available for our celebration of the work of Chicago Cubs great and Hall of Famer, Andre Dawson, and Chairperson of the Urology Department at Loyola Medicine, Dr. Chris Gonzalez. Please join us on November 1 at Smith & Wollensky in Chicago to celebrate these two fine men, as well as what we hope will be an exciting playoff run for the hometown Cubbies.
We are pleased to announce the launch of the Tuesday Recap, a new offering for our Online Women's Support Group. Read below about this new initiative for women journeying with men with prostate cancer.
In the closing days of this important month, we are asking for your financial support for our work. Please give today to enable our team to continue our work across the prostate cancer community. |

Hey Chicago! Come Celebrate the Work of Andre Dawson and Dr. Chris Gonzalez |
| |
As the Chicago Cubs remain hopeful of qualifying for the postseason, we invite you to join us to honor Hall of Famer and Cubs legend, Andre Dawson, and Dr. Chris Gonzalez, the chairperson of the Urology Department at Loyola Medicine.
We will celebrate the contributions of these two great leaders on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, beginning at 5:30 PM at Smith & Wollensky in Chicago.
Proceeds from this event will benefit the ongoing programming of Fans for the Cure. These programs include women’s and men’s support groups, in-person PSA screenings, production and distribution of educational materials, the medical referral program, and health fair attendance across the nation.
For information about sponsorships and underwriting opportunities for what we trust will be a memorable evening, please email Joseph Cosgriff at [email protected]. |

Donate During Prostate Cancer Awareness Month |
| |
As we continue our work throughout National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we are turning to you, our fans, to ask for your help in funding our work. This week we will be emailing committed members of our community to ask for donations in support of what we do.
We understand the value of early detection and regular testing for prostate cancer. We need your help in making sure this message reaches as many men as possible.
Along with our medical partners and grantors, we have focused our efforts where our presence and services are needed most: in underserved communities. We need your donation to help us to bring education, awareness, and medical testing to those people who are most affected by this horrible disease.
We continue to emphasize to men that the overwhelming percentage of diagnosed prostate cancer cases exhibit no symptoms – which can lead to the disease being missed at its earliest and most treatable stages. We need your gift to help us spread this important message at health fairs, educational seminars, and on our podcast.
Please give today! |

Women's Support Group Launches the Tuesday Recap |
| |
Dedicated to building and strengthening the community of women in our Online Women's Support Group, Fans for the Cure recently launched a newsletter specifically for the women in this welcoming group. We are calling it the Tuesday Recap as it will share a quick overview of the previous meeting's talking points and, perhaps more importantly, the key takeaways and resources shared during the meeting.
The Tuesday Recap is an initiative spearheaded by the group's moderator, Karen Shaffer. She was eager to extend a helping hand to the women in the group during the off-weeks – and to women who might have missed the Tuesday evening online gathering.
The first issue of the Tuesday Recap shipped this morning. Upcoming emails will follow on the Tuesdays after the group's meetings, i.e., on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month. The newsletter will be sent to all women who have registered to attend any of our Online Women's Support Group meetings. |

Yankees, Mets Screenings Highlight Awareness Month |
| |
Fans for the Cure is marking National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with onsite screenings with the two New York City MLB teams and their official healthcare partners.
On Wednesday, September 20, the charity collaborated with Montefiore/Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Yankees to screen well over 150 men on the 200 level behind home plate at Yankee Stadium. High marks to the folks at Montefiore and the Yankees for this successful, well-run event.
We will be conducting the second MLB screening of September with NewYork-Presbyterian and the Mets on Thursday, September 28, at the Piazza 33 Club at Citi Field. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and participants must have game tickets. Those wishing to be screened will be issued a day pass to the Piazza 33 Club (Excelsior Level –5th Floor) by Mets personnel outside the Club.
Again, many thanks to the Mets and Yankees, as well as to their healthcare partners – NewYork-Presbyterian and Montefiore/Einstein. |

This year, Fans for the Cure is launching a new take on a long successful initiative. Welcome to GROW-vember!
We are inviting our friends, colleagues, partners, supporters, and more to grow their facial hair during November – to help raise awareness about prostate cancer and to fundraise in support of our programs in the prostate cancer community.
So, grow a mustache. Maybe a beard too. Or stick on fake facial hair. Whatever works for you is how we want you to get involved! |

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH: GET THAT SECOND – OR THIRD – OPINION |
| |
At Fans for the Cure, we advocate for men to connect with solid, proven doctors who can deliver that sense of "This is the right way forward."
Through our community programs, health events, and local and national outreach, we have established an extensive network of leading urologists, oncologists, and medical professionals with whom we have established relationships and whom we trust with medical referrals. Should you be seeking a medical referral, we are happy to help connect you with doctors in all areas of the country for testing, second opinions, and guidance explaining treatment options. |
