This week we transition to the month of June – U.S. National Men’s Health Month – which encourages men and boys to take charge of their bodies by making conscious healthy living decisions. Three possible lifestyle steps can include planning and eating nutritious meals, adding or maintaining a regular exercise and walking program, and staying current with doctor visits and cancer screenings. 

For last month’s Stay in the Game podcast, I interviewed an impressive public servant, U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell from the 9th Congressional District of New Jersey. A military veteran, he is a fierce advocate for his local community, especially for improving quality of health benefits and access for his fellow veterans. A prostate cancer survivor, Rep. Pascrell had much to share on a wide range of topics during our engaging discussion. Please give the podcast a listen – the link to it is below.

We are in the process over the summer months of lining up doctors and subject matter experts to meet and share with our online support groups. You can read more about that below and stay updated by visiting the website or registering for support groups.  

Lastly, I will close with a shout of thanks for the boys baseball team of Stratford (CT) High School for holding their third annual “Light Blue Game” for prostate cancer awareness. Thank you to everyone who played in the game and to the fans who donated to support the players’ and coaches’ efforts.

Fans for the Cure

It was a conversation between illustrious Fordham grads as Ed Randall discussed their alma mater and so much more with Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ, Ninth District). As with so many prostate cancer survivors, Pascrell made clear that he believed that his journey had made him stronger. Indeed, the two descriptions one hears most about Pascrell from colleagues in the House and from his staff are “hard-working” and “tireless.”

Pascrell, a lifelong resident of Paterson, New Jersey (birthplace of Lou Costello, Patrick Warburton, and Bucky Pizzarelli, among others), spoke with pride about his work on behalf of veterans, specifically the refurbished outpatient VA facility in Paterson that will benefit over 30,000 of his constituents. He returned several times during the conversation to touch on his love for both Paterson and his home state of New Jersey.   

In addition to National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, June is also the month when we celebrate Father’s Day (Sunday, June 18). 

For Father’s Day this year, Fans for the Cure will be running a fundraising campaign honoring our fathers and aimed at raising money to fund our programs that support the prostate cancer community. The campaign will be conducted online via our website, through email, and across our social media outlets. 

We look forward to engaging with you over the course of the campaign and hope you can make a donation in support of what we do.

The following events are part of our work with Molloy University, the University's School of Nursing, and Molloy's Community Care mobile health screening unit. We will be on hand answering questions about prostate cancer and sharing educational and awareness materials.

The man who founded our charity wants to have a catch – or maybe a thousand of them. 

Ed Randall has filled his car’s trunk with new baseballs, oiled up both his Rawlings glove and balky septuagenarian shoulder, and is currently mapping out his summer schedule. He plans to travel to health screening events, people’s homes, baseball fields, sunny beaches, or wherever a Catch for the Cure can take place.  

When we announced Ed’s role in the annual Baseball Road Trip, we expected there would be interest. We are pleased to report that the response so far to having a Catch for the Cure with Ed has officially hit the category of “surpassed expectations.”  

The short version is this – sign up for a catch, get your family and friends to support it, then get in touch with us to get on Ed’s schedule. We will then try to book a date and time with Ed that works for everybody.

Both of our online support groups are free and open to all men and women respectively, with registration required.
