With winter weather advisories in effect here in the East, it takes the wind out of the “Spring is just around the corner” messaging. But we are just a couple of months away from May, when spring indeed will be in full swing, along with a full schedule of outdoor health and awareness events for Fans for the Cure.
Thanks to collaborations on Long Island with Molloy University and its Community Mobile Clinic, as well as with ColumbiaDoctors and Columbia Nursing School in upper Manhattan, the Bronx, and southern Westchester County, the charity has been able to add about forty in-person health events this year. When added to the existing games booked on the Summer Baseball Road Trip and the scheduled Women’s and Men’s Support Groups, Fans for the Cure will begin the month of March with over 125 awareness, education, support, and screening events already on the schedule for 2023.
Stay tuned for The Catch for the Cure, or simply, THE CATCH. We hope to have the sign-up pages 100% in place by April 1. It works like a 5k or 10k run in that you get support from friends and family. But instead of having to run or walk, you choose a partner (or partners) and have a catch. Stay tuned for a separate email at the end of March with more details. We thank our friends at Rawlings for their generous sponsorship of this initiative.

We are delighted to share that General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) has welcomed one of our own community members to their team of Consumer Reviewers following our sharing of their call for applicants in our January newsletter.
A friend of our charity saw the article in our newsletter and applied for the opportunity to help review biomedical research applications that will lead to the elimination of death from prostate cancer and enhance the wellbeing of service members, veterans, and all men experiencing the impact of the disease. Earlier this month, we were informed that our friend was accepted into GDIT's program.
Given our focus on patient advocacy, we are excited by this new way to support those working to advocate for men and their families who are journeying with prostate cancer. |

Charity Attends, Supports Andre Dawson Baseball Classic |
| |
|
Fans for the Cure was proud to lend its support to the Andre Dawson Baseball Classic, an annual gathering of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) that took place at the MLB New Orleans Youth Academy last weekend.
Televised by the MLB Network, the Classic also hosted a baseball tournament for five 12-and-under (12U) teams that were chosen from among national RBI and Youth Academy programs.
Fans for the Cure founder and Chief Advocacy Officer, Ed Randall, and Hall of Famer Andre Dawson joined MLB Network announcers Gregg Caserta and Bo Porter on the air for the fifth inning. The discussion initially focused on the importance of Black men getting screened for prostate cancer, building on an initiative begun by the charity in Andre’s local community in Florida. Dawson, Randall, and Caserta also called attention to MLB’s programs to increase interest in baseball among Black youth.

The charity is also available to conduct – with members of its Medical Advisory Board – educational seminars about the importance of prostate cancer screenings and the value of early detection. These sessions take place at companies’ offices and include educational presentations, Q&A follow-up, and hand-outs.

Through our work in the prostate cancer community, we have recognized that men and their loved ones often find themselves struggling to find a doctor or healthcare provider who gives them confidence and comfort in a proposed treatment regimen. Whether it be a search for one’s first urologist or oncologist, or whether the treatment follow-up process seems off, men deserve the best possible medical partner (or set of partners) for every step of this journey.
At Fans for the Cure, we advocate for men to connect with solid, proven doctors who can deliver that sense of "This is the right way forward."
Through our community programs, health events, and local and national outreach, we have established an extensive network of leading urologists, oncologists, and medical professionals with whom we have established relationships and whom we trust with medical referrals.
