March has been a month of heartfelt connection, renewed purpose, and exciting opportunities for Fans for the Cure. We were honored to host a wonderful Caregivers Reception in early March, recognizing the often-unsung heroes in the cancer journey. The evening was made especially memorable by the presence of our Chairman, Steve Garvey, who joined us via Zoom with his characteristic warmth and encouragement, and by Karen Shaffer, our dedicated Women’s Support Group moderator, whose compassion and leadership continue to guide and uplift so many.
In recognition of National Caregiver Appreciation Day, we also presented a deeply moving and informative webinar on March 3 led by Dr. Allison Applebaum—renowned clinical therapist, author, and founder of the Caregiver Center at Mt. Sinai. Dr. Applebaum’s insights into the challenges and triumphs faced by caregivers brought invaluable perspective to all who participated.
Looking ahead, we are excited to bring our free community prostate cancer screenings to several locations this spring. On April 23, we will be in the City of New Rochelle, followed by our much-anticipated event at Citi Field in partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian and the New York Mets on May 13. In addition, we are honored to present a series of prostate health seminars in April and May with the Generations Church in New Rochelle and the Messiah Baptist Church in Yonkers, continuing our mission to educate, support, and serve.
Finally, a special word of thanks to Major League Baseball and the Office of the Commissioner for inviting Fans for the Cure to make a presentation to 197 community outreach professionals representing all thirty MLB teams. We were humbled by the opportunity to discuss ways their ballparks and communities can become centers for critical prostate cancer awareness and screenings.
As always, we are grateful for your continued support and belief in our work. Together, we are continuing to make a difference in people’s lives. |

Thank you to everyone who made possible our full day of celebrating caregivers on March 3. It was heartwarming to welcome such a strong turnout of guests at our evening reception, including many community activists and leaders who run non-profits that provide support to caregivers.
Thanks, too, to our generous sponsors of this special day, including Calvary Hospital, the New York Giants, Ball Chain Manufacturing, Ed Sirlin, and Maspeth Federal Savings Bank.
We have already reserved the reception room for March 3, 2026. We hope to see you there.
For those that missed it earlier this month, Dr. Applebaum's excellent webinar is posted on our YouTube channel. Click on the blue button below to watch it online. |

MEA’s Chip Conley Joins Men’s Support Group
|
| |
Best-selling author, TED Talk speaker, noted business entrepreneur (Airbnd, Joie de Vivre boutique hotels), and founder of the Modern Elder Academy, Chip Conley, joined the Men’s Support Group on Thursday, March 6.
In his hour with us, Chip Conley redefined aging as an opportunity for growth, emphasizing that modern elders are wise, adaptable, and constantly evolving. They serve as both mentors and interns – sharing wisdom while always remaining open to learning.
Chip also shared insights about his own diagnosis of prostate cancer, describing how it became a powerful catalyst for his dedication to mindfulness and for advocating for proactive self-care and regular health screenings. He continued: “It became my teacher, urging me to live with authenticity, courage, and intention.”
Chip Conley’s wisdom provides a profound roadmap for anyone looking to thrive personally and professionally into their elder years, leveraging experience as a powerful asset rather than as a limitation. |

Fans for the Cure on the Road (Again) for Father's Day
|
| |
This Father’s Day, Fans for the Cure returns to the road with special ballpark events scheduled in Philadelphia and Kansas City, partnering with two storied MLB franchises—the Phillies and the Royals—to raise awareness about prostate cancer.
At both Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, the charity will be active throughout the day, kicking off festivities with ceremonial first pitches. Additionally, fans attending the games will have the chance to see a new scoreboard video featuring Karen Shaffer, Fans for the Cure’s Communications Director and longtime moderator of the organization's Women’s/Caregivers’ Support Groups.
Those attending these games will also find informative educational materials about prostate cancer available at Fans for the Cure’s information tables. These resources provide vital information on early detection, treatment options, and support services, underscoring the organization’s mission of promoting awareness and education about prostate cancer, as well as supporting men and families as they deal with this insidious disease.
This Father’s Day, Fans for the Cure again invites baseball fans to join us at the ballpark, celebrate loved ones, and support the cause of prostate cancer awareness and prevention. |

FFTC Speaks to MLB Community Leaders
|
| |
Fans for the Cure’s Chairman, Steve Garvey, recently led the charity’s presentation via Zoom to 197 members of the thirty MLB teams’ community outreach departments. The discussion focused on the importance of ballparks and community gathering places becoming centers for prostate cancer awareness, education, and onsite screenings.
After fielding questions from MLB teams, the charity gave shout-outs to two Minor League clubs, the Worcester Red Sox and the Cedar Rapids Kernels, for pushing to expand the collaboration to include ballpark, community, and region-wide screenings and men’s health days. Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has already scheduled a statewide men’s health day on Sunday, September 20, 2026, in Dyersville, Iowa on the Field of Dreams Movie Site. |
