Thank you to everyone who supported our 2024 Visionary Dinner that is honoring (tonight!) our charity’s longtime advocate and champion, Phil Simms. Special thanks to the NFL Foundation, Jude and Mary Kate Donato, the New York Football Giants, John Catsimatidis, and so many others for supporting what we do.
October gave me a chance to ice down my arm after 30 Catches in 30 Days (more like 50, felt like 100), an initiative to promote early detection of prostate cancer that took our team to Seattle, Yankee Stadium, Citi Field….and Steve Balboni’s house. There was even a stop at City Hall in New York City, a video of which attracted about a million views on a political reporter’s X (formerly Twitter) page.
For Fans for the Cure, this Friday will mark the start of GROW-vember, where people can grow (or apply) facial hair to call attention to the importance of men taking responsibility for their health by staying current with their doctor appointments and cancer screenings. Visit this GROW-vember page to create a page of your own or to support our lineup of non-shaving friends.
November’s schedule includes more activities than simply rooting for our mustaches and beards to grow. On November 9, we have a doubleheader in Long Island, collaborating with the Cradle of Aviation Museum to provide educational handouts and hearty handshakes to veterans (who will be admitted to the Museum for free that day) and then heading down the road to make a presentation at the annual health fair at the Lawrence Road Middle School in Hempstead from 3-5 p.m. Please feel free to join us at either event if you’re in the area.
Our charity is well underway in organizing our 2025 schedule of health fairs, screenings, presentations, podcasts, and support groups. Please get in touch with us at [email protected] if you would like Fans for the Cure to participate in your church, community, or corporate health event. |

Three Podcast Episodes to be Released
|
| |
Fans for the Cure’s Stay in the Game podcast will be making available three podcasts in the coming weeks, two of which are part of the Women’s/Caregivers’ Series that is hosted by Karen Shaffer.
Karen has recorded two conversations – one with best-selling author, Allison Applebaum, PhD, of Mt. Sinai Health System, on the subject of caregiving and the other with Stacy Loeb, MD, MSc, PhD (Hon), on the results of a recent study Dr. Loeb co-authored about the quality of life issues faced by partners of patients with prostate cancer and how these struggles impact their sexual well-being.
Jim Hu, MD, MPH, will be Ed Randall’s guest to discuss a recent paper Jim co-authored that compared the results of transperineal vs. transrectal biopsies in testing and for staging prostate cancer. The podcast with Dr. Hu will be released in late November.
Stay in the Game is ranked by FeedSpot as No. 4 among “15 Best Prostate Cancer Podcasts in 2024” and has a 4.7/5.0 Apple rating. |

NY Islanders, Fans for the Cure Join Up for Hockey with a Heart
|
| |
On Saturday, October 18, Fans for the Cure teamed up with the New York Islanders at UBS Arena in Elmont, NY, for a prostate cancer awareness night as part of the team’s season-long Hockey with a Heart program.
Fifteen volunteers helped sell 50-50 tickets on a night when Fans for the Cure was the evening’s featured charity. Our signature “Get Tested” video with Steve Garvey and Negro Leagues Museum President Bob Kendrick played once during warmups and again during the game.
Thanks to Islanders’ co-owner Jon Ledecky and Community Relations dynamo, Jackie Decker, for a terrific evening at the rink. We greeted hundreds of hockey fans on the concourse, with at least twenty-five men and couples stopping to share stories and insights from their own prostate cancer journeys.
Fans for the Cure is currently exploring several road trip collaborations in late 2024 and early 2025 with teams and their healthcare partners as part of the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer initiative. |

Men’s Support Groups Joined by Dr. Katz
|
| |
Fans for the Cure welcomed Dr. Aaron Katz of NYU Langone – Long Island to its bi-weekly online Men’s Support Group on Thursday, October 17. The host of Katz’s Corner on local WOR-AM radio and a monthly host on SiriusXM’s Doctor Radio, Dr. Katz led a spirited discussion centering around the complex link between testosterone levels and prostate cancer.
On Thursday, December 12, best-selling author, dynamic speaker, and Modern Elder Academy founder, Chip Conley, will speak to the group about how to live, grow, prosper, and thrive in middle age. Chip’s latest book is Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better With Age (Little, Brown and Company).
We are finalizing guests in early 2025 from the world of nutrition (with a specialization in prostate cancer) and health insurance.
The next meeting of the Men's Support Group is Thursday, October 31 at 7 p.m ET. Yep, that's Halloween. Boo! |

There are initial plans for a one-hour online discussion during the day, as well as an early-evening reception in New York City for, as Jonny Imerman of Imerman’s Angels would put it, “social impact friends.”

Bells are Ringing….at the NYSE
|
| |
This Just In – Fans for the Cure has just been invited to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (18 Broad Street, NYC) this Thursday morning, October 31.
Our presence is a lead-in to November, when many of us put our razors away and attempt to grow beards, mustaches, goatees, and “other” to call attention to men (and boys) taking responsibility for their health. We are losing too many of our partners, brothers, fathers, sons, uncles, and friends at a young age, many because health maintenance – and especially cancer screening – might not be a priority for them or easily accessible in their communities.
Yes, it’s short notice, but we could use an entourage for this occasion. Feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you would like to join us on this Thursday at 8:30 a.m. for a pregame breakfast (compliments of the NYSE) and the 9:30 a.m. bell ringing.
If you cannot make it in person, tune in to CNBC at 9:30 a.m. to watch the ten seconds (or less) we will be on TV as the segment goes to commercial. |
