We hope it has been a joyful, healthy, and safe summer for our friends and extended Fans for the Cure family. Special thanks to those of you who have stopped by to visit us at screenings and community awareness events, especially at the Uzo Felix Health Foundation Health Fair in Roosevelt, New York. It was the first time we had ever seen two mobile health units – in this instance, Mt. Sinai and Molloy University – conducting PSA blood tests, mammograms, and general health screenings at one event. Congratulations to the UFHF for the large turnout of healthcare partners, vendors and, most importantly, members of the local community, all of whom braved the rain to make this event a success.
Highlights for August will include the Monroe Township Senior Softball League Tournament on Thursday, August 22, and our support of the Atlantic Health System and prostate cancer awareness at Jets’ Training Camp on August 20-21. Not to mention the (rescheduled) Wiffle Ball Tournament on Saturday, August 10 at the New York Athletic Club on Travers Island in Pelham, New York.
September is not only filled with events from coast-to-coast (see the list), but it also calls for me to take part in 30 Catches in 30 Days to call attention to the importance of men going to the doctor and getting a PSA blood test to screen for prostate cancer. You are invited to chip in and support the initiative, with all proceeds helping to fund Fans for the Cure’s programming schedule.
The month of September (National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month) promises to be even busier. Watch the Events section on our website as we add health fairs and gatherings where we hope to communicate to men and families the importance of doctor visits and cancer screenings.
Again, we hope your summer has been a happy one. Please stop by when we are in your community. |

Uzo Felix Health Foundation Event |
| |
A big shout-out to our friends at the Uzo Felix Health Foundation (ufhf.org) for a well-run and well-attended health fair in Roosevelt, N.Y., on Saturday, July 13. Battling occasionally heavy rain, the organizers, health partners, and attendees remained in high spirits throughout the day, with frequent PA announcements about the importance of PSA screenings, which were being offered onsite by Mt. Sinai.
The UFHF was formed to honor the loving memory of Felix U. Okoro, who died of prostate cancer in 2019. |

Randall to Have (At Least….) 30 Catches in 30 Days in September |
| |
Fans for the Cure Founder Ed Randall has announced that he will mark National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month by having a catch on every day for the month of September. Ed is undertaking the initiative to “call attention to the importance of men taking responsibility for their health and getting a PSA screening for prostate cancer.” He asks that you consider contributing $30 – or a dollar per catch – to Fans for the Cure’s programming fund. You can donate via the blue button immediately below this article.
For information about becoming a 30 Catches sponsor, supporting Ed’s bold initiative in another way, or possibly helping to offset the co-pay for his inevitable Tommy John surgery, email us at [email protected]. |
