September has always been an important month for Fans for the Cure, but this year’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Month was easily the most impactful in our charity’s history. With your support, we brought education, awareness, and free screenings to thousands of men and families across communities large and small.
We began the month at The Diamond with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, partnering with Virginia Urology to continue our presence in central Virginia. Up in New Jersey, we were proud to be part of the Lenny Cathcart House of Music Festival in Plainfield and partner with the NJCEED mobile unit team from Hoboken Family Planning, connecting with hundreds of men and their loved ones. In New York City, our collaboration with the Yankees and Montefiore Einstein brought prostate cancer awareness (and 191 screenings) to Yankee Stadium, while Harlem Cares!, alongside a number of outstanding medical partners, reached families in the heart of Harlem. We also conducted two screening events with Richmond University Medical Center on Staten Island.
As we look ahead, the work does not slow down. With the support of a ScreenNJ-Rutgers grant, we will be part of over a dozen community health events across New Jersey in October and November, focused specifically on screening uninsured men and ensuring that PCa education and care extend to those who need it most.
To everyone who came out, volunteered, or partnered with us this September — thank you. Together we are creating a stronger, healthier community and advancing our mission in meaningful ways. |

Expanding Screenings in New Jersey
|
| |
Fans for the Cure is now in the third month of a one-year grant awarded by ScreenNJ at the Rutgers Cancer Institute and the Rutgers Cancer Health Equity Center of Excellence. The grant supports our work across New Jersey, where we participate in educational conversations about prostate cancer at health fairs and community gatherings, while also referring uninsured men to onsite and hospital PSA screenings.
In September alone, our team attended events in Newark, Roselle, and Plainfield, where 71 men were screened. With many more events scheduled through the fall, we are grateful for this opportunity to extend our mission to communities that need it most. |

Season-Long Pledges Power Our Mission
|
| |
With the conclusion of the 2025 regular season, members of the Boone Squad and the Flying .474s will be receiving their pledge invoices this week. Your support this season has helped advance our work, including the launch of a ScreenNJ-Rutgers grant that makes prostate cancer screenings available at no cost to uninsured men throughout New Jersey.
The Flying .474s take their name from manager John Gibbons’ remarkable .474 batting average with the 1986 Mets, when he went 9-for-19 during that championship season.
We are deeply grateful not only to Aaron Boone and John Gibbons for leading the way, but also to Padres’ manager Mike Shildt and others across baseball who pledged to Fans for the Cure based on their teams’ 2025 season accomplishments.
To make a last-call donation to the Boone Squad, The Flying .474’s, Mike Shildt’s Padres, or the team of your choice, write to us at [email protected].
Together, you’ve turned wins, home runs, and memorable moments into meaningful impact for men and families on their prostate cancer journeys. |

Yankee Stadium Screening a Home Run
|
| |
Despite a weather forecast that threatened to postpone the Yankees-White Sox game on Thursday, September 25, the annual prostate cancer screening at Yankee Stadium proved to be another solid success.
A collaboration among Montefiore Einstein, the New York Yankees, Fans for the Cure, and the American-Italian Cancer Foundation, the in-ballpark screening resulted in 191 blood draws that tested men for prostate-specific antigen (PSA).
Special thanks to Drs. Mark Schoenberg and Kara Watts from Montefiore, Crystal Santos, also from Montefiore, Eric Fritz of the Yankees organization, and Audacy, MLB Network, SiriusXM, and the announcers and commentators on these stations who upped their game to spread the word about this year’s screening. |
| |
- Fans for the Cure will be taking part in onsite screenings around the country this November as part of the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer initiative.
- As part of National Family Caregivers Month, Fans for the Cure will organize several caregiver events – including webinars and receptions – in November. Watch for details at fansforthecure.org.
- We are planning our next Visionary Dinner for January 2026, with the date and honoree to be announced by November 1.
- An upcoming Stay in the Game podcast will spotlight the American Cancer Society’s incredible Hope Lodge in New York City.
- Already 50 catches into his annual 30 Catches in 30 Days, Ed Randall has taken the program into extra innings by continuing to schedule catches into October to call attention to the importance of early detection in the successful treatment of prostate cancer.
And thanks to our partners at MLB, we are learning Spanish.
“Batea el cáncer de próstata fuera del parque.” (Hit prostate cancer out of the park.) |

Fans for the Cure Rings Closing Bell at NYSE
|
| |
Founder Ed Randall led a fifteen-person contingent down to Broad Street in downtown New York City to sound the 4 p.m. Closing Bell of the New York Stock Exchange on September 18. The invitation from the NYSE was part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and an emphasis on men taking responsibility for their prostate health. The fifteen-second bell and the traditional pounding of the gavel (skillfully handled by Dr. Mark Stein) were televised by CNBC.
Thank you to the NYSE, as well as to those who supported us on the podium and by cheering us on from the floor of the Exchange. |
